At Sharei Chesed Religious School, students grow in their Jewish learning through Hebrew reading, prayer, holidays, music, rituals, customs, and connection to Israel. Our program is designed to support each child’s learning while helping students build the skills and confidence needed to participate in Jewish life.

HEBREW READING
Students work on Hebrew-reading skills as a foundation for prayer, Torah learning, and synagogue participation.
B'NAI MITZVAH PREPARATION
Students develop the skills needed to participate in and help lead parts of the Torah Service.
JEWISH LIFE & HOLIDAYS
Students explore Jewish holidays, rituals, customs, and traditions throughout the school year.
ISRAEL & JEWISH MUSIC
Students build a connection to Israel and Jewish culture through music, learning, and discussion.
WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
The Sharei Chesed Religious School program focuses on preparing students for Bar/Bat Mitzvah while also helping them build a broader connection to Jewish life.
Students begin by developing Hebrew-reading skills and then continue into the leadership skills needed for the Torah Service. Along the way, students learn about Jewish holidays, Jewish and Israeli music, Jewish rituals and customs, and the importance of cultivating a meaningful connection to Israel.
Classes are primarily formed by student grade level and secondarily by Hebrew reading mastery. Students entering Sharei Chesed Religious School should have reading-readiness skills in their native language.
When a student enters the program closer to Bar/Bat Mitzvah age and does not yet read Hebrew, we make every effort to place the student with an appropriate grade-level class while also providing individual Hebrew-reading support during class. In some cases, additional support outside of Sunday classes may be recommended, and families may be provided with tutor options for extra assistance.
A Partnership Between School and Family
Religious school works best when students, families, teachers, and the synagogue work together. Outside class review is expected each week so students can continue building confidence and progress between Sunday sessions. Families are an important part of the learning process, especially as students prepare for Bar/Bat Mitzvah and begin taking on more responsibility in Jewish prayer and synagogue life.
Bar / Bat Mitzvah
Preparation
Families should schedule a Bar/Bat Mitzvah date at least one year in advance. Once the date is placed on the synagogue calendar, the student can begin working on the specific Torah reading.
Students typically begin with the Maftir, the final part of the Torah reading, which is usually at least three verses and often no more than six. After the student has mastered the Maftir, additional verses may be added depending on the student’s readiness and the amount of time before the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Some students may also learn a Haftarah reading from the Prophets.
Families and Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidates are expected to attend Shabbat services once a month beginning six months before the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, as well as holiday services. Shabbat services are held Saturdays from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM, with the Torah Service beginning at 11:00 AM.

Scholarships are available. Sharei Chesed believes that finances should not prevent any student from participating in religious school. If you feel you are unable to meet the financial obligations, please contact Rabbi Ettedgui.

Sharei Chesed Religious School is open to those families with a Sharei Chesed annual Family Membership.
Membership in Sharei Chesed Congregation includes participation in synagogue services, access to rabbinic services for lifecycle events, enrollment of children in religious school, attendance at congregation and board meetings, and a voice and vote at the Annual Congregation Meeting.
